Samsung will reportedly make a Galaxy Ring announcement next month. No, a sequel is not on the way for a January release, but @MaxJmb from X says the company may introduce two more sizes for the existing Galaxy Ring model.

These two new sizes will complement the now-available nine options at the larger end. Samsung will reportedly release:

  • Size 14 (USA standard) with a 23mm diameter and model number SM-Q514.
  • Size 15 (USA standard) with a 23.8mm diameter and model number SM-Q515.

The larger Galaxy Ring sizes might feature slightly beefier batteries. At least, that is the case with the current lineup, which ranges from sizes 5 to 13. The larger the ring, the bigger the battery.

Samsung will supposedly introduce these two new Galaxy Ring sizes in January, but whether the launch will coincide with the Galaxy S25 series release is unclear.

The story continues after the video

The next Galaxy Unpacked event is said to take place on January 22. The big reveal will be the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra, but we may also learn more about the upcoming Samsung XR headset and other products.

It's safe to assume that Galaxy Ring sizes 14 and 15 will be available in the same color options as the rest of the range, i.e., Titanium Silver, Titanium Gold, and Titanium Black.

Likewise, they should cost the same as the other sizes, given that there is no price difference between the current 5-13 sizes. Samsung is selling the Galaxy Ring for $399 and offers first-time buyers the Sizing Kit, valued at $10, for free.

After January, we're guessing Samsung may also introduce a new Sizing Kit which would include mockups for the entire lineup in all 11 sizes, 5-to-15.

Samsung is revamping the camera interface on Galaxy smartphones with Android 15 and One UI 7, and in the process, the company has made one feature of the extremely useful Camera Assistant app unnecessary.

Back in 2022, Samsung launched the Camera Assistant app for flagship and select mid-range smartphones that added some advanced settings and tweaks that weren't available in the stock camera app out of the box. Among those tweaks was the option to add persistent buttons for additional zoom levels, such as 2x and 100x, to the viewfinder.

One UI 7 has easier and improved zoom control in various camera modes

Starting with One UI 7, those additional zoom levels are enabled by default and no longer require the Camera Assistant app. On a Galaxy S24 Ultra, you will see the 0.6x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x buttons at all times, and tapping any of them will bring up the 30x and 100x buttons as well.

On a Galaxy S24 or S24+, you get 0.6x, 1x, 2x, and 3x by default and can tap them to bring up the 10x, 20x, and 30x buttons. As before, long pressing any zoom button will bring up a slider that lets you manually increase and decrease magnification to any value between the supported zoom range of your device.

This change applies to both the photo and video modes, though the latter will continue to have a much smaller maximum zoom level. Samsung has also improved the zoom control in the Pro video mode. You can now control the zoom speed for smoother transitions, as Samsung puts it. This is not the case for the standard video recording mode, though that may change later as One UI 7 is still in development.

Better zoom control isn't the only change that's coming to the Samsung camera app with One UI 7. Samsung has also redesigned the UI to bring all important controls to the bottom of the screen for easier one-handed access. This extends to the mode selection menu. You now see all the different modes in the bottom half of the screen.

It's been over a week since Samsung opened up the One UI 7.0 beta program. The first beta firmware was released for the Galaxy S24 series in South Korea, the United States, and Germany. Others countries are due to get it as well, and Samsung is also expected to roll out the One UI 7.0 beta 2 in the coming week.

While Samsung does open the beta program to the public, spots tend to be limited, so if you don't register in time you end up having to wait for the next release whereby additional spots are released. That may happen on Monday, December 16.

Monday could see a flurry of One UI 7.0 beta activity

Monday could be an interesting day for everyone who's watching the beta progress very closely. Samsung was initially expected to expand the availability of the first beta to more markets, including India, earlier this week.

However, that didn't happen, and it also meant that the One UI 7.0 beta 2 that was expected to be released within the week as well wouldn't hit the enrolled devices. Now there has been some indication from Samsung support that the beta would be expanded to other markets on December 16, and there's a chance that this is also when the company rolls out the second beta.

Spots will inevitably open up by then so keep an eye on our website and social media feeds as we'll let you know as soon as it goes live. Samsung is currently rolling out the beta only for the Galaxy S24 series but other devices will eventually get it as well, but as recent events have shown, at least the Galaxy S23 series won't receive it before 2025.

Google has improved its Quick Share app for Windows, making it easier to change visibility settings right from the taskbar. The update also brings some bug fixes and other minor improvements.

Quick Share app for Windows gets improvements and bug fixes

Samsung Quick Share

Google is rolling out a new update to the Quick Share app (version 1.0.2034.4) for devices running Windows 10 or Windows 11. So, you can now install that update on your Galaxy Book laptop.

The update improves visibility settings, allowing you to switch your device's visibility between No One, Contacts, Your Devices, and Everyone from the Windows System Tray. Earlier, you had to switch between those settings by opening the app. Google has also added the Quick Share logo to app animations.

There are some other minor improvements and bug fixes. When a URL was shared, the Quick Share app incorrectly classified it as text. But that bug has been fixed, and the URLs (webpage links) will now be identified correctly. It also fixed a bug that prevented the app from creating a shortcut in the ‘All Apps' section of the Start Menu after installing the Quick Share app.

The new version of the app also fixes a bug that caused a delay in opening the app after a user has signed into their Windows account.

WhatsApp has introduced new features and improved video call quality. This move came just in time for the holidays when people are likely to connect with distant family members and friends over video calls. So, what are those new features? Let's find out.

WhatsApp gets new features and better video call quality across devices

In its blog post, Meta announced new features and improved video call quality for WhatsApp. The first feature is the ability to select call participants in a group before initiating a group call. This makes it easier if someone in the group is not ready to participate in an audio or video call.

WhatsApp Improved Video Call Quality December 2024

Video calls are getting ten new effects to make your calls even more fun. Some of the effects include puppy ears, underwater, and a virtual microphone for karaoke. This is especially useful during the holidays when you are likely to connect with kids in the family.

On the desktop, when you click on the Video Calls tab, you will see all the options that help you make a video call. These options include Start Call, New Call Link, and Call A Number.

Meta also announced that it has improved video call quality across all the platforms. So, whether you're calling from a Galaxy smartphone or a Galaxy Book computer, video call quality should now appear improved.

In other news, Samsung recently released One UI 7.0 beta update to the Galaxy S24 series in select countries, and you can check out all the new features in our video below.

It's likely that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S25 series will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite across the entire lineup, though it appears that the Exynos 2500 may still have a fighting chance. Earlier reports have claimed that Samsung would go for the same Exynos and Snapdragon split as this year's lineup, with the Galaxy S24 and S24+ having the Exynos in most markets while the S24 Ultra used Snapdragon only.

That may not materialize due to production issues with the Exynos 2500. Samsung would then have no other option but to go with the Snapdragon 8 Elite for the entire Galaxy S25 series. However, the company is still committed to have Exynos back in the fold, and it may do that in a significant way with the Galaxy S26 series.

Get ready for another year of Exynos vs Snapdragon roulette

Samsung Foundry's low yields on the 3nm process are primarily being blamed for Exynos 2500 not getting a shot at glory with the Galaxy S25 series. The foundry isn't able to make enough of them feasibly to provide the mobile division these chips at the scale it requires.

However, the foundry has reportedly addressed many of those yield issues and while it may be too late for the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung is now said to be considering the use of the Exynos 2500 for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Flip FE. These would be the first foldable phones with an Exynos chipset as all previous models have exclusively been Snapdragon.

Given that the clamshell foldables sell fewer units than the Galaxy S flagships, it could be sort of a test run for the company before it decides to bring back Exynos to the lineup. A tipster claims that Exynos will return with the Galaxy S26 series in a similar fashion to the Galaxy S24, with the two base models featuring Samsung's chipset while the Galaxy S26 Ultra gets that year's latest Snapdragon.

Samsung's reasons for trying to bring Exynos back into the fold go beyond a desire to extract maximum benefit from vertical integration. Qualcomm is reportedly making these Snapdragon chips more expensive for OEMs while the depreciating Korean currency is also making imported components more expensive for Samsung. The Exynos chip will help it offset some of these risks while retaining healthy margins in an industry that doesn't have significant margins to begin with.

Samsung finally showed off a glimpse of its Project Moohan XR headset yesterday. The glimpse was timed with Google's announcement of Android XR, a brand new platform for mixed reality headsets and smart glasses. Samsung's Project Moohan headset will be the first to ship with Android XR next year.

We've been hearing about a different kind of mixed reality device from Samsung over the past few weeks. It emerged that smart glasses would be the first such device to hit the market, and even though it has partly unveiled the headset, that doesn't mean the smart glasses are not off the table.

Samsung's smart glasses could see a more favorable customer response

Samsung has been working on its XR devices for some time now. It publicly confirmed back in 2023 that it was working on a new “XR Experience” in partnership with Google and Qualcomm. That partnership has resulted in Project Moohan, which ostensibly uses a Qualcomm chip and obviously runs on Android XR.

There were rumors about Samsung working on new smart glasses as well. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon mentioned during an interview a few months ago that Samsung is making mixed reality smart glasses that will also use a Qualcomm chip.

Subsequent reports out of South Korea have revealed some interesting details about this project. Samsung will apparently do a limited release in Q3 2025 with an initial production run of 500,000 units.

These smart glasses will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm's AR1 chip and an NXP chip as the APU. A 12-megapixel camera will be present along with a 155mAh battery. Google's Gemini AI assistant, which will do much of the heavy lifting on Project Moohan XR headset as well, will be present on the smart glasses.

While Samsung didn't say anything about its smart glasses yesterday, Google did confirm that Android XR will support glasses as well for “all-day help.” It also mentioned that “lots of choices” for smart glasses will be available, with Gemini providing helpful information such as translations, directions, and message summaries without needing users to reach for their phone.

Amid the excitement for the Project Moohan XR headset, Samsung fans shouldn't forget that there's another innovative device in the company's pipeline, one that could see a far more significant response from customers compared to a full-fledged headset.

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled its first XR headset. It runs Google's Android XR operating system and apps designed for XR headsets. While it relies on eye and hand tracking for UI navigation, it will also be compatible with motion controllers.

Samsung is making first-party motion controllers for its XR headset

Samsung has announced that it is making first-party motion controllers for its XR headset. Motion controllers will be natively compatible with Android XR, which makes the operating system compatible with thousands of existing VR applications. Motion controllers are also more accurate and reliable than eye and hand tracking.

YouTube in Android XR

Some XR headsets, like Meta Quest 3, come bundled with motion controllers. The Apple Vision Pro doesn't support motion controllers, so all the apps need to be redesigned from the ground up to make them compatible with eye and hand tracking.

Since Samsung's XR headset will be natively compatible with motion controllers, existing VR apps and games from other platforms can be easily ported over to Samsung's XR device.

Samsung also confirmed that its XR headset will be the first device to run Android XR. Earlier this year, Samsung teased a partnership with Google and Qualcomm for an XR device. Now that the prototype version of it has been showcased, it is expected to get even better when it launches later next year.
