Galaxy S25 Ultra to skip display upgrades the latest iPhone enjoys

So far, we've heard many great things about the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra, from its overall improved design to the incredible performance levels that the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip will enable.

Unfortunately, not everything is roses, and Samsung will reportedly have to cut some costs to compensate for the higher expenses around AI, memory, and chips. One area that will suffer is the display.

Samsung to use M13 materials for the Galaxy S25 Ultra AMOLED

Samsung will use M13-generation OLED materials for the Galaxy S25 Ultra's display instead of the superior M14 solutions, confirmed DSCC CEO Ross Young (via @DSCCRoss) with Samsung's material suppliers.

Even though Samsung Display already manufactures OLED panels based on M14 materials for devices like the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, the Samsung MX (mobile experience) division won't enjoy this advanced display technology for cost-cutting reasons.

Samsung is already spending more on the latest chips, more memory, and everything else that relates to generative AI, and unfortunately, the company will reportedly try to offset some of these higher costs by skipping the screen upgrade. The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip alone is said to cost nearly 21% more.

The story continues after the video

So, what will the Galaxy S25 Ultra miss out on by employing an M13-based AMOLED display instead of an M14? CEO Ross Young says M14-generation screens are 20-30% more efficient than M13 ones and have a longer lifetime. M14 panels are also said to be brighter.

On the other hand, other sources have said the Galaxy S25 Ultra screen will be better than the S24 Ultra's screen. Hours before @DSCCRoss broke the news regarding M13 panels for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, @UniverseIce was claiming he believes the Ultra phone will adopt M14 materials because the phone's screen is brighter and has superior viewing angles and screen color accuracy, aside from bringing other improvements.

Nevertheless, by the sound of it, the Korean tech giant will skip M14 upgrades next year. Samsung will likely announce the Galaxy S25 series in early 2025, in January or February. More details about display tech and other specifications should surface over the next few months. Stay tuned.
