Yesterday, Samsung unveiled its first XR headset. It runs Google's Android XR operating system and apps designed for XR headsets. While it relies on eye and hand tracking for UI navigation, it will also be compatible with motion controllers.

Samsung has announced that it is making first-party motion controllers for its XR headset. Motion controllers will be natively compatible with Android XR, which makes the operating system compatible with thousands of existing VR applications. Motion controllers are also more accurate and reliable than eye and hand tracking.

Some XR headsets, like Meta Quest 3, come bundled with motion controllers. The Apple Vision Pro doesn't support motion controllers, so all the apps need to be redesigned from the ground up to make them compatible with eye and hand tracking.

Since Samsung's XR headset will be natively compatible with motion controllers, existing VR apps and games from other platforms can be easily ported over to Samsung's XR device.

Samsung also confirmed that its XR headset will be the first device to run Android XR. Earlier this year, Samsung teased a partnership with Google and Qualcomm for an XR device. Now that the prototype version of it has been showcased, it is expected to get even better when it launches later next year.
